Old Abattoir

Rockingham

In 2015 Stephen Carrick Architects was engaged by the City of Rockingham to assist with the Conservation of the Old Abattoir, located along Darlie Street in Hillman.

The Old Abattoir was constructed in c1943 of local limestone and tile roof and serviced as a small abattoir. The building was subsequently used as a dairy and later was part of an equestrian centre.

In the years that have followed since its use, the Old Abattoir has fallen into disrepair and has succumbed to vandalism. The Rockingham District Historical Society, City of Rockingham and community alike have since deemed that the building should be retained and reinstated to its former physical appearance.

Stephen Carrick Architects first visited the site in September 2015 to determine, piece by piece, what components of the built fabric could be retained and reused. Stephen Carrick Architects has since liaised with representatives of the City, Historical Society and specialist consultants to generate a high level of documentation for reconstruction.

The City of Rockingham are currently considering future use and funding options.
